Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil is the largest country in South America and the Latin American region . It is the fifth largest country in the world , both in terms of geographical area and population. It is the largest Portuguese - speaking country in the world, and the only one in the Americas. Is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of 7,491 km ( 4,655 miles) bounded on the north Venezuela , Guyana, Suriname and the Overseas French of French Guiana ; in the northwest of Colombia but on the west Bolivia and Peru ; on the south west of Argentina and Paraguay and on the south by Uruguay. Several groups of islands is part of the Brazilian territory , such as Fernando de Noronha , Roccas Atoll , Saint Peter and Paul Rocks , and Trindade and Martim won . It is bordered by all other countries in South America except for Ecuador and Chile and occupies 47 % of the continent of South America.
